Oily hair is caused by a number of reasons:

Often people purchase products to treat dry hair in order to treat the ends, but the extra moisturizing will cause problems if the roots are already oily, so it’s best to use products for oily hair to combat the oiliness and then moisturize just the ends of the hair where the moisture is needed. There are many reasons why hair could be oily at the root, below are the most common reasons.

Oily hair can be a result of over washing your hair. When you continue to wash your hair, the scalp over compensates by producing more oil. Long showers with hot water (which dries the scalp) will also increase the oiliness of your scalp.

Dry scalp . This may sound unusual that a dry scalp would cause hair to be oily, but what happens is that when the scalp is dry, it secretes more oil to counter the dryness.  If you suffer from dandruff and oily hair, this would be an indication that your scalp is compensating for dryness by putting out more oil.

To relieve this, you can massage our Organic Tea Tree Oil (must be used diluted in a carrier oil) into your scalp to reduce the dandruff and help moisturize your scalp.

Using herbs like our Brahmi, Bhringraj, Amla and Neem can help with this problem of dry scalp.  Our Sukesh Ayurveda is a special blend that includes all of these herbs, and contains exclusive additions. Each of these herbs work together and individually to address scalp conditioning and hair follicle nourishment concerns.  Sukesh Ayurveda can be used in a number of ways and you can find instructions, and recipes in in our blog:  HOW TO USE SUKESH AYURVEDA

Using a mild clarifying shampoo bar like our very popular Soapnut Shampoo bar will help to wash the excess oil from the scalp.  Soapnuts (aritha) are known to balance the oils  in the scalp and the superfat in our shampoo bars are excellent to help ensure extra nourishment is being added to your scalp and hair strands.

Nutrition is something that many people neglect when they are thinking about the health of their hair.  The saying “You are What You Eat” rings true when it comes to the health of your hair.  The health of your hair is directly affected by what you are putting in your body

  • Omega-3 fatty acids are essential for healthy hair, these are fats that our bodies can’t make. You have to eat them in your diet. The hair shaft is partially made up of Omega-3 fatty acid.  You can find Omega-3’s in salmon, walnuts, flax seed, olive oil, fish, winter squash.
  • Biotin (B7) and Vitamin E help protect your hair from sun damage. (You can find Biotin, vitamin E and omega-3’s in Walnuts)
  • Zinc – a diet that is deficient in Zinc will lead to hair loss and a dry flaky scalp. Zinc can be found in oysters, beef, nuts and eggs.
  • Protein – Without enough protein, your body can’t replace the hair that you shed naturally every day – the hair that is produced will be dry, brittle or weak
  • Beta-Carotene – (Vitamin A) – every cell in your body needs Vitamin A. It protects and produces the oils that sustain your scalp and if you are low in Vitamin A, it can cause a dry, flaky scalp.  Vitamin A can be found in sweet potatoes, carrots, dark leafy greens and squash.
  • Iron A diet that is low in iron is a major cause for hair loss – Iron carries oxygen to the hair follicles and helps keep them healthy.
  • Vitamin C is Critical for circulation and supports the blood vessels that feed the follicles, too little vitamin C in your diet can lead to hair breakage.

To treat the oily roots, a clarifying shampoo like our Soapnut Shampoo Bar should be used first.  This will cleanse the hair and remove all the buildup. Then we suggest doing a hot-oil treatment with our Cocoveda Oil. It is made with organically certified coconut oil infused with the hand selected ayurvedic (healing and medicinal) herbs you need to moisturize, strengthen and nourish your scalp all in one.
