Real Women. Real Hair.

Real Women. Real Hair.

Henna for Hair Beauty We all want gorgeous, long and healthy hair. Or at least that’s what I’d like to believe.  There are so many things holding us back. We have lives. We don’t have enough time. We are rushing around like mad people. We are just always on the go. Self care and self love has never been more important. Don’t let those moments for yourself, be swept under the rug. We need to find that balance. The focus. The time. Don’t you remember that on the airplane they said in case of an emergency to place your own oxygen mask on before helping someone else. Well that’s REAL EVERY DAY LIFE.  How can you be someone amazing for someone else, when you can’t be who you need to be first? It’s okay to take time for yourself. Tell yourself that. You have the right to do so. It’s not selfish. It’s being the best you, you can ever be. When you’re the best version of yourself, you can easily be the best version of yourself for someone else.  Now how does this apply to gorgeous, long and healthy hair. Well that’s your crown and glory. Take the time to care for your hair is a huge part of self care. Most of us do our hair every single day. This is part of your daily ritual.  Since your already doing your hair on a daily, use the healthiest products with natural ingredients to care for your hair. Not only is this about your hair but this will affect yourself as a whole person. Your appearance is the...

Hi! My name is Khadija

Hi! My name is Khadija

Hi! My name is Khadija. I’d love introduce myself, as you may or may not know me. I’m the brand owner here at Henna Sooq with my amazing husband, Jamal. Over the years we have grown with you and Henna Sooq has blossomed. This journey has been amazing. We are constantly becoming and evolving. When I started running Henna Sooq, it started with a henna body art class and I was completely hooked. At the time I also had 4 children, aged 6 years old and under. I wanted to figure out something I could do for myself while still being able to stay home with my little ones. Henna Sooq was perfect! It would allow me to make my own schedule and be my own boss! Here we are now 13 years later and my 4 littles one are definitely not little anymore. We now have 6 beautiful children with the oldest being 19 and the youngest being 10. This business has taught me a lot. It has taught me how to be a woman, a caring human being, better at my communication and to give from myself fully without expectations. I’m always a work in progress but without Henna Sooq I wonder how I could even come close to being the person I am today. I tied in my expertise of Henna for Hair coloring with Henna Body Art services and it was like the perfect marriage has been made. Henna for me has been the tool to bring people from all walks of life, passions, cultures, races, faiths and all those beautiful smiles know affirms that I’m doing...

Letter to my sisters about the harms of black henna

Letter to my sisters about the harms of black henna

Assalaamu Alaikum (may peace be with you) my dear sisters. Black henna. It’s a chemically based form of henna body art. It’s not jagua. It’s not natural. It causes extremely bad allergic reactions that can cause long term scarring and health affects. It’s made with hair dye like Bigen, which should never be put onto the skin. It is even banned in Canada. Scarring from black henna. I took this photo at a hair show in August 2017 This is something that is near and dear to my heart. I wouldn’t be writing this post if I didn’t care. It’s not about being in the business of henna or about trying to be better then someone else, it’s about our community. It’s about our health and choosing natural options. We have so many choices out there that we really shouldn’t even consider anything that can harm us or our children, nieces and nephews. It really saddens me to see the sisters in my own community still doing black henna. I’m even more sad about the henna artists in our community who continue to do black henna. Several of these artists also already know the harms of black henna. They choose to continue to offer black henna and I just don’t understand. This is not a personal issue, this is a community issue.  I try to understand by breaking down the artists possible reasons in my mind. They want to make money. Honestly, you can make a very good living doing henna and jagua using natural ingredients. Otherwise, how would I still be in business? It’s up to us the...

Good bye, Henna Chai. Hello, Rituals of Henna.

Good bye, Henna Chai. Hello, Rituals of Henna.

It’s with both happiness and sadness that we say good bye to Henna Chai. Not a full goodbye though. What does this all mean? Well let’s start at the beginning. Since 2007, when I founded Henna Chai, this was an event that focused on henna, socializing (hence the chai part of the name, which is a spiced Indian tea) and learning through others about the art of henna. Initially actually I was going to call my event Spring Fling but there was another event that had the same name, which I didn’t realize. So at first I was bummed but then Henna Chai came along and it fit perfectly. As you know I am a firm believer in everything happens for a reason and it is destiny. That was almost ten years ago and whereas I’ve loved and accepted the name Henna Chai, it felt a little stuck. Like it didn’t fully describe what I was doing and didn’t really expand far enough. I don’t know how to explain it but I loved it but it wasn’t perfect. Someone told me the other day that Henna Chai sounded more like a product then an event. That’s kind of true, now that I think about it. We need to make a Henna Chai shampoo bar or some type of Henna Chai product. Right? I didn’t want to just give the name up nor everything I’ve done so far to build that event up. It started off as just a simple, small get together and has evolved over time. A few years it was a full henna weekend at a retreat...
