Here is Jenn’s story:

So far my natural hair care regimen is simple, though I’m looking to add to it as I can. I’ve been using 100% henna for about 2 months now.

My mix is simple as I found that lemon juice dried out my hair. I mix with cooled hibiscus and chamomile teas, and add a TBSP or two of cloves or allspice for scent and to deepen the stain a bit. I’ve tried Jamila 2008, Yemeni and cheap Indian grocery hennas, and so far I love the Yemeni for the deep cool red tones and intense stain. In addition to this, I do coconut milk soaks every other week, and lightly oil with coconut oil as I feel my hair needs it. I like it because it’s a nice light oil that doesn’t seem to interfere with the locking of my dreads – anything that leaves a lot of residue in the hair can do that. I just started using catnip rinses this past week, and instead of shampoo, I use a natural soap bar. I like how these products don’t irritate my skin the way so many conventional beauty products do – I have very sensitive skin that tends towards dermatitis outbreaks with anything with fragrance/color/chemical, and since being pregnant my skin is even touchier, to the point where almost everything causes issues. Natural products are a godsend to me!!! It’s also vastly improved the condition of my hair, which was extremely damaged from years of chemical processing. For the future, I want to look into some of the ayurvedic herbals such as shikakai, aritha, amla and methi, and would love to try some other shampoo bars as well… Not only has this regimen been good for my hair, but it also goes so much more with my life philosophy in general than when I was bleaching/dyeing my hair ALL the time, using SLS shampoos, etc. Back to nature, living holistically and in synergy with the earth – this is how I want to live.
