Essential oil production requires at times a large amount of herbs, fruit, or flowers to produce a small amount of oil. It requires hard labor, and can be a very expensive production. It can take about 500 pounds of rosemary to produce 1 pound of oil.
A high quality essential oil is expensive, but it’s worth it. It’s important to know how to distinguish high quality essential oils from poor quality ones. Here are a few tips:
- Look for terms such as 100% pure, g & a (genuine and authentic), organic on the label, or ask for therapeutic grade essential oils. You can also check the ingredients listed to be sure the oil contains 100% of what it says it is.
- Essential oils evaporate quickly. You can see this happening with your own bottle of essential oil, as it slowly diminishes. You can test the purity of your essential oil by placing a drop on a piece of paper, and spread it around. Leave it for 5 to 10 hours. Come back and see if there is an oily stain there or not. If there is one then there may be other oils mixed in with your essential oil. If the oil is pure then it would have evaporated completely, and leave no stain or a very tiny one. - Vegetable oils have a greasy feeling to them, and essential oil don’t. Certain essential oils may feel greasy but it absorbs quickly, or feels like water. Should the essential oil feel like vegetable oil, then it probably has been diluted.
- Essential oils will come stored in amber glass bottles. This keeps the light (sun exposure) from the oil.
- Keep your essential oils in the fridge. This extends their life, and keeps them fresh. Be aware that other items or food in your fridge may capture the scent of the essential oil.
- Please don’t ever use essential oils on your skin directly. It is safest to dilute your essential oil with a base oil, or into your favorite hair oil/spritzer, or mix into your henna paste recipe.
- If you are pregnant or nursing, please consult your midwife or doctor regarding which essentials are safe and/or not safe for you.
