Now that you have henna sitting in your hair, are you wondering how you’re going to possibly wash all of this mud out?
First off, henna is pretty thick but once it’s all washed out your hair is going to be absolutely gorgeous, shiny and soft. The big pay off is that it naturally colors your hair, and will cover grey hair.
Easy ways to wash henna (and any ayurvedic herbal hair treatment) out of your hair:
- Soak in the bath tub or a tub (called a mermaid soak by some). This way your hair strands spread and flows easily in the water. This will loosen most of the henna and allow it to all come out. Use fresh flowing water as needed to clean the tub out. You can use shampoo and/or conditioner during this method.
- In the shower (my fave!) using shampoo and conditioner wash everything out. Be careful to avoid tangles. Flow hair down with the flow of the water. I also will flip my hair to get the underneath so as to get everything out. Sometimes extra conditioner is needed.
- Co-wash. Using conditioner only which adds moisture back to your hair, you can do either the mermaid soak or shower method.
It’s normal that the henna hair coloring treatments might run for a few washes. Sometimes my own runs for 2-3 weeks even. Just protect your pillowcases and use dark towels.
- Wash out with a shampoo that clarifies as that will strip out the color and benefits from the treatment.
- Use products with or use soapnuts (aritha) to wash the treatments out. Use these before to clarify.
What is your favorite method?
Hi! I recently relaxed my hair after a 6 month stretch and hair is feeling limp and in need of a protein treatment. I plan on using affirm 5 in 1 reconstructor for my next wash to add some protein to my hair.
Can i do a henna pre shampoo before my wash and protein treatment?
Hi Mef. Thanks for your post. You can do that. It should be fine.
Hello. Unfortunately to lighten it’s difficult with henna as it’s not a chemical dye. It doesn’t lighten the natural hair tone of the hair. If you use henna alone it will look lighter with a reddish tint but a light brown won’t be possible without chemicals. It shouldn’t get more dark though. Hi Michelle. Henna and indigo are pretty permanent. It might fade…but not for everyone. It has to grow out. Did it get too dark or what would you prefer as in the color tone of your hair?
