“I usually use this indigo with the “Organic Lush Brown Kit” to dye my hair black using the 2-step process. I used to be lazy about it and do a 1-step, but it just doesn’t achieve the same results — doesn’t last as long, nor look as nice & dark when it fades. It’s worth the couple extra hours to do the 2-step if you want darker hair!
Here’s a few tips that make it easier & make the color better:
-Once you’ve hennaed and washed it out, mix up indigo with about 2 TBSP of salt per 100g. Salt is known to help the dye stay a bit longer.
–*** Put half a teaspoon of xanthan gum powder in the indigo. ***
This is a LIFE SAVER! Indigo can be so runny and messy, but this xanthan stops all that aggravating nonsense. But don’t put too much, or the indigo won’t flow enough and you’ll have red henna spots left over where it didn’t dye.
-After washing out the indigo (2 hrs or so later), rinse your hair with vinegar. Most prefer Apple Cider Vinegar, but I’ve used plain white with good results.
This part may dry out your hair, but it balances the PH levels and locks the indigo in so it won’t get all over your clothes, pillows, etc.”
Amazing review! Thank you.
For vegans, guar gum is a perfect substitute for xanthan gum.
Great review. 🙂 It’s always nice when there are helpful details like there are here.
One of the most remarkable properties of xanthan gum is its ability to produce a large increase in the viscosity of a liquid by adding a very small quantity of gum, on the order of one percent. In most foods, it is used at 0.5%, and can be used in lower concentrations. ^..”*
Hello HS. I did a henna indigo Sunday. Today, id like to do a shikaikai wash. Would that wash out my beautiful black?
Les, yes it might take out your indigo as usually deep cleansing with herbs should be done before the henna and indigo treatments just in case and to avoid stripping
Could you use something else other than xanthan gum, cornstarch for instance or talcum powder? Or would these have a negative effect on your hair and the color?
A heavier thickening agent like cornstarch will probably dilute the color. We don’t recommend talcum powder.
