Can henna really loosen your curl pattern? Yes henna does affect and possibly loosen your curl pattern. Every curly type can vary by how henna loosens it and for some their curls won’t loosen at all. Either you love this aspect of henna or you hate it. For those who love the loosening affect of henna that’s great and you’re good to continue on with your henna for hair regimen as usual.
For those who absolutely love their curls and want to maintain them then this blog post is for you.
Our Organic Amla powder is what you’ll need to help maintain those curls. There are two methods and recipes in using amla powder. This can be added into your henna natural hair regimen and as a natural repairing mask to restore damaged curls.
Method One
You can directly add amla powder to your henna and ayurvedic hair care recipe. When choosing to add amla powder directly to your henna recipe it will reduce some of the red coloring and dyeing you’ll get from the henna. Clients that don’t mind that their henan coloring won’t be as vivid red or copper can add amla powder to their recipe. You can also add amla powder to any hair recipe you’re creating to add volume, maintain and restore curls and promote hair growth.
Recipe
- Take 100 grams* of henna powder (or any ayurvedic herb combination totaling this amount) and place into a bowl
- Add 3-4 tbsp of organic amla powder to your recipe
- Mix dry ingredients together
- Add a warm liquid of your choice. We recommend water, ACV or green tea
- Add your liquid slowly until your paste becomes the consistency of thick yoghurt
- Allow your recipe to sit 3-4 hours (or if a non-coloring recipe only 30-60 minutes)
- Apply generously onto damp hair
- Leave in your hair 3-4 hours (or if a non-coloring recipe only 30-60 minutes)
- Rinse out thoroughly (you can use shampoo and/or conditioner as desired)
- Dry and style as usual

Method Two
You can use amla powder on it’s own as well. Clients choose this method because they prefer not to reduce any of the red results they would achieve with their henna recipe.
Recipe
- Take 100 grams* of organic amla powder and place into a bowl
- Add your favorite conditioner or our Sweet Honey Hair Nourisher as desired
- Mix enough of each in to get a paste the consistency of thick yoghurt
- You can add some warm water to the recipe if needed to get consistency right
- Mix thoroughly
- Apply generously onto damp hair
- Leave in your hair for 1-2 hours
- Rinse our thoroughly (you can use shampoo and/or conditioner as desired)
- Dry and style as usual

The aloe vera powder will help keep the dryness out of your hair and moisturize it nicely. You can use your regular conditioner afterwards BUT if you do notice it pulling any color out then stop and let it settle a few days. Some of these things have to be individually tested out because everyone’s hair keeps the color differently.
Thanks!
So about 1Tbsp or amla and 1 Tbsp of aloe powder to 100g-125g of dry henna? Oh and when it’s time to deep condition can I add aloe powder to my conditioner?
Good evening Angelica. Yes that would be about right. 5% of your total herbs should be the organic aloe vera powder. You can add up to 2 tbsp of amla powder. Yes you can add aloe vera powder to your conditioner as well. We hope this helps.
Thank you so much! Have a great week.
Hi guys! Im so new here, i am not even sure when we say amla tones down the redness, it means tones down the darker, burgundy red, or the “orangy” red? If i wanna keep my orange tone but i also wanna keep my curls, what to do?
Thank you!
Welcome to our blog! I’d recommend that you don’t add amla then directly to your henna recipe because in this case you don’t want your color altered from what I understand. I would recommend you to the step where you do amla on it’s own after your henna treatment. There should be mention of that method in this blog post.
What if some of yourwhat id you already experienced curl loosening? I have thick curly hair that is fine but smaller curl diameter and dense. Ive been doing full henna treat, ents every 6 weeks since last august and i notice that the curls in the front definitely loosened. Would amla only treatments bring them back (i love an plan to keep my vibrant red from the henna). Or is amla only for if your curls HAVENT losened yet? Would hennaing only the roots help? When would i need to do a full head treatment? Does the color fade if i do roots only?
Hello
To maintain curls adding alma powder is essential to your recipe and for your hair. You can also do amla on its own to bring back curls. If you do roots only ys the length will fade so you do have to do all of your hair once in awhile.
You can do the amla powder only treatment whenever you can. It’s up to you.
Welcome! Amla can tone down the red found in henna. Just slightly usually. Yes you can add hibiscus but it may not be as red anyhow due to the amla powder. You can repeat your treatments every 4-6 weeks.
Hello!
It sounds like amla might be bothering you since it is very acidic. Very much so. Have you tried adding aloe vera powder to your mix for added moisture?
You can definitely try the amla alone but be wary if it’s causing sensitivities to you. Add it with conditioner for extra slip and ease of use. We hope this helps.
