There are so many different henna powders, how do we choose the one that will work best for us?
There are a few things that are a must when choosing any henna powder:
–Fresh. You must always buy fresh henna powder. If you want a great stain, don’t just grab henna off the shelf (since who knows how long it may have been sitting there) Even from crop to crop you will notice that the freshest henna powder gives the best stain results. After all, doesn’t a chef use the freshest ingredients in the preparation of our meals?
–Body Art Quality. This means that the henna powder is the best quality since they take the leaves from the top of the plant with the most dye content. It also means that it is 100% pure and natural. This term is usually used to describe henna that is also used for body art.
(Please remember that not EVERY henna powder nor herb is body art quality. Ask yourself this: Is this henna powder or herb used as a body art product or really for hair usage? This term is sometimes only used for marketing purposes. Always be well informed.)
–Finely Sifted. None of that dirt, grit, sand, nor sticks help with getting a great staining henna paste. Even if you try to sift it yourself, you lose most of the henna powder you purchased.
–Pure. Must contain no pesticides or chemicals. No PPD nor any other powders or ingredients. Only get 100% pure henna powder.
Now that we have the basics down, now comes the individual henna powders.
Ultimately the highest dyeing henna powder on the market. For both henna for hair clients, and henna artists, by far the best choice of all henna powders for those wanting gorgeous red tones, grey coverage and long lasting henna body art tattoos. This organically certified henna powder is ready to use within 3-4 hours.
Khadija’s personal favorite: Supreme Blend Henna Powder
This henna powder blend was created by Khadija herself bringing the best henna powders together for a creamy, smooth, yet flowy henna paste. She uses this henna powder on all of her clients. We love this powder especially for body art temporary henna tattoos. Can be used on hair as well. Dye release is only 3-4 hours.
Jamila Henna Powder Jamila henna powder yields great stains results and comes conveniently packaged in 100 grams foil packages in sealed boxes (when it is stamped with summer crop for body art usage, and is also used for hair). As of more recently dye release is only 8-12 hours for body art tattoos, and 3-4 hours for use on hair, before ready to use. It is a reliable henna powder, but not great if you need henna quick. It has the ultimate best sift of ANY henna powder. It is very popular amonst professional henna artists, and for hair dyeing. It washes out of the hair very easily, and the texture pf the paste is similar to melted chocolate. It yields deep reddish-brown tones for body art and for hair orange-red tones. This henna comes from Pakistan.
Please read our more detailed article on Jamila henna powder.
Organic Rajasthani Indian Henna Powder
In ever increasing popularity, the organic indian henna powder from the Rajasthani Region, is very well balanced. You get dye release in 8-12 hours for body art. So you can start a batch in the morning and have it ready by the evening. The stains results are some of the darkest I have ever seen. Typically reddish tones (burgundy/mahogany) and sometimes near cherry black on skin. For hair it yields a reddish-burgundy tone.  For hair usage, this powder we recommend you allow it to sit from 3-4 hours, and then apply onto your hair. It is triple sifted and through nylon cloth. On lighter hair it may come out more orange-copper toned.
Yemeni Henna Powder
Note: Sadly this has been out of stock for quite some time due to political issues within Yemen. Our yemeni henna powder comes from the Sana’a region. It takes 8-12 hours to achieve dye release for body art. For hair, we recommend you allow this henna powder to sit from 3-4 hours before applying it. It is well known for being one of the stringy hennas. This henna powder is now much better sifted (since the 2009 crop), since the company has upgraded its henna processing facilities. Now many more henna artists are using this henna powder. It is absolutely one of the most popular henna powders for hair dyeing, and covers grey very well. It gives the most gorgeous, deep red tones of any other henna powder currently.
A very popular henna powder for both body art and hair, this henna is found in the Western Sahara. It has the quickest dye release. It is best to let this henna sit at least 2-6 hours for body art. For hair usage, only allow to sit for a maximum of 1 to 2 hours and then apply it. The dye can demise quickly if left out too long. It’s not a good henna to freeze as a henna paste. It is also a stringy henna. It has great color, usually very bright and becomes quite dark suddenly (on skin). We usually recommend this henna powder for achieving brown to black tones along with indigo, when used in hair dyeing because the least amount of red tones will show through on your hair. We recommend it because it has a fast dye release, and alone on hair it gives orange to red tones.

i want brown hair i am using henna regularly once in 15 days my hair is look like a thread now i was terribly confused because does henna make my hair like suggest some right henna powder which is available in india where am in pondicherry
Manimala, thank you for your post. Henna alone will make your hair reddish but you’ll have to see if you can find any indigo locally. Add indigo to your henna recipe and it’ll give it browner tones. Otherwise we do ship to India and you can order it with us at http://www.hennasooq.com
Hello i wanted to henndigo so my hair comes out dark dark brown- black could nupur henna mix be use for henndigo process? or do i have use jamila or a different pure henna with no herbs added?
I am trying to decide what powders I should order. I have blended hair with dark blond, light brown & medium brown shades. I want to deepen my color, thicken my hair, and add shine. My natural color is in between a light & medium brown with gold & red highlights, and that would be my ideal. I was thinking about doing a mix of 40% Moroccan henna 30% indigo and 30% cassia. Do you think this would yield the results I am desiring, and if so, how should I prepare this blend, and how long should I leave it on?
Hi
This will be my first time trying henna but I don’t know how it will turn out on my hair. The reason being that I’ve died my hair Auburn brown 9 months ago and it is now growing out, so my hair in now dark brown and a lighter reddish brown. Will it come out to be two toned? And will the results of henna be the same because of the chemicals in by hair?
Thank you

Hi Khadija
Hope this finds u well.:)
I have off shoulder black asian hair with grey. Its dry as well. I have done chemicals to make it straight and slight waves.
I want to achieve grey coverage with strong lasting colour of light brown or if not able to, perhaps red brown tone. As i dun like black hair.I wan to see colour! I dislike orangy or copperish ones. Moisturising as well. I like to be time saving
hoping to put them all in 1 bowl.
Can i achieve that? How do i go about it and how much powder to buy for this formula?
Thanks alot!!!
Chloe
Khadija,
Your blog is so informative, thank you! I’m looking to use henna for the first time to go from medium brown to a medium red-auburn tone. I’m nervous to choose the wrong henna since I don’t want fire red. Could you guide me some? Thank you!
Jennifer, thank you!! Those two colors you want are two different tones though. You can’t have both unless you’re doing highlights. Which color did you want? What is your natural hair color? Or are you saying your hair is medium brown and you want it more red-auburn? If that’s what you mean then you can use our amazing Organic Rajasthani Indian henna and it’ll be perfect!

Hi Chloe! You can use our Organic Lush Brown Kit, it’ll be perfect: http://www.hennasooq.com/organic-lush-brown-kit/
For moisturizing please select from our amazing hair oils, the right one for your hair type: http://www.hennasooq.com/moisturize/
Hi Khadija,
I have just recently started looking at your site and I must say that it is refreshing to find some answers to all of my questions. I started on this naturally journey a little over a year ago and have had some good and bad processes with all of the big name “natural hair care products” companies. I am having problems with dryness then oiliness with products, and I have fallen victim to the over the counter henna.
My questions are what type henna products do I need to cover over my very very slight (somewhat brown hair) with some orange looking streaks (formerly gray) in my hair.
And what do you suggest for shampooing, pre shampoo, conditioner, and conditioner. I have tried MJ, CD, and FNWL products. Some do ok but I cannot achieve a good healthy curl pattern, growth, shine, or bounce with any of them.
In other words, PLEASE HELP ME with my pride and glory!!!!!
Sorry that should say moisturizer as well.
Hi Leisa! Thank you for messages and what a great one too!! We appreciate that our site has been helpful to you and you’ve let us know.
Jamila would be a good choice and it’s an easy henna to use. You could also add some of our organic amla powder to your henna so that you get that bounce back into your curls, naturally đŸ™‚ Lastly our Cocoveda shampoo bar and hair oil you will absolutely. So please take a look at these products, read through the description and do place an order as these products would be perfect for what you’re aiming to achieve. Enjoy!!
Thanks for the quick response Khadija. However, I didn’t mention that I want to change my hair color. I want a deep auburn red color or should I say a dark brown with reddish highlights. Is the Jamila henna still the correct one to use?
I just want to clarify before I order.
Hi Khadija,
My hair is curley and very rough. it is of medium length, i love long hair a lot, i tried so many products but my hair did not grow at all. even if i cut my hair, it will grow to the same length again, but not more than the original length. Can you suggest me some products (herbal) to grow my hair and make it soft?
i don’t want any coloring to my hair, i love my black hair as it is now.
Would hope for a good and positive reply from you…
Presently i am using a shampoo for my hair wash.
Thanks.
Has anyone heard of Radico Organic Henna? Is it pure and does it work well? It seems very economical but that can be a bad thing. I am wanting to use henna & Indigo for the first time. I have dark brown hair to the middle of my back with some grey. There is just way to much information online.
MJA hi how are you? Sorry we don’t know much about other brand names of henna powders and companies as here at Henna Sooq (www.hennasooq.com) we carry our own line of henna and ayurvedic products. Using body art quality henna is also the best choice and with ones that have a very high dye content as well for best grey coverage, and the same for indigo. Let us know if you have any questions on using these herbs đŸ™‚
I purchased the Moroccan henna, Indigo, and Amla powder to cover my grey. I am very pleased with my results. I ended up mixing the henna and amla powder and the color acheived was so pretty, I decided against the indigo. My grey did not flame, rather the amla powder gave the henna a golden, orange, red, brownish tone that is beautiful. My grey comes in fast, its two weeks now and a touch up is needed. I only hope the color will not change because I really like it. I will be back with the results. Thanks Khadija!
Hi Rebecca. I hope so too. Keep us posted đŸ™‚ If your hair ever gets too orange or red just add organic cassia to your henna and amla recipe đŸ™‚
Such an informative blog!
I have been using henna + indigo to cover my grey unsuccesfully and wanted to know if perhaps i’m doing something wrong in your opinion. I’m using 25% Rajasthani henna, mixed with cool strong black tea. I let that sit overnight and then mixed it with 75% indigo. I left that on for about 4 hrs and then rinsed with just water and some conditioner. The results are very pleasing after the color settles a few days, but I end up losing the indigo down the drain over time and my greys show through bright red to yellow.
I’m trying to achieve a very dark brown on my greys to match my natural hair color. I didn’t do a 2 step process as I was afraid of ending up with jet black hair. I would also like to minimize the red shimmer, so I was planning on adding amla this time.
In your opinion is Rajasthani henna a good choice for the results I’m trying to achieve? Is there something else I should do to have the indigo stick better to the henna? What about after care for henna-ed hair?
Thanks!
Thank you for your post Libitnia. If you’re using our organic rajasthani henna then first please don’t let it sit overnight. it’s way too long and the dye is demising. Only 3-4 hours for best results. The better the henna clings the longer the indigo clings and stays on and use a mild soft gentle shampoo so it doesn’t take the color out too.
You could use Red Raj instead as well as it has a higher dye content. Find it here at http://www.hennasooq.com/red-raj
Hello! I’ve tried other henna products in the past but came across you site and this is my 1st time shopping from U guys so I am excited but overwhelmed at the same time.
I need your advice!
I am planning on hennaing my hair red (I have had a lot of hairloss), so I am ordering Red Raj, hibiscus petals powder, camellia oil, patchouli, sukesh ayurveda.
But I have a son and I am hennaing his, jet black, so I am also purchasing indigo but can’t decide on which henna to apply on his hair 1st. His hair is dark brown and has never had any chemicals in it. It’s wavy and very thick and coarse (hispanic hair).
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!
Thanks!!
Hi Gaby. How are you? Thank you SO much for choosing Henna Sooq. We’re excited to have đŸ™‚ How old is your son? I just want to make sure he’s of a good age to be doing henna and indigo treatments. Usually over 12 is fine as some people are allergic to indigo, so please make sure you do a patch test on his skin to be sure. and for yourself as well if you try indigo. About 5% of our clients are allergic to that herb.
For your son he could just use the jamila. It’s an easy henna to work with and use for the first time.
For you, you have a great selection!! Enjoy
Gaby, also if you prefer though too, one last suggestion is if not the Jamila then the Moroccan henna would be an amazing choice. It’s coming back in stock in about 1-2 weeks
Thank you, thank you so much for this! I want to try using henna because my hair is really damaged from some highlights I had gotten last year but I wasn’t sure what the different types of hennas meant and which one to get. This guide helped ease my mind so much. I feel much more comfortable about trying henna now.
Jennifer you’re more then welcome đŸ™‚

Hi Khadija,
I need your advice for choosing the right brand for dying my hair with henna. I am an asian with black hair but now few strands have started going grey. I am apprehensive on using any chemical dyes so want to try using henna.I have used some of the Indian brands which give a lighter brownish tone. I want to have a brown-dark brown color for my hair. Which product should I choose from your website?
Thanks
Shireen
Hi Shireen. You could use our Organic Lush Brown Kit for the color you’d like: http://www.hennasooq.com/organic-lush-brown-kit/
Salam,
I like to order henna n indigo as im asian with hair that is turning grey n white althou they were dark brown to black when u was young. Now i like to get them dark brown with black undertone.
What type of henna and indigo works best?
How much do i order without having to order too often in order to save cost on shipping but how long will the henna n indigo can be kept in their powder form without losing their dyeing power?
Hello I am trying to determine which combination of products to use to color my mostly grey hair it’s original black color.
I am a dark-skinned black woman with very curly, but relatively fine, chin-length hair. My hair, scalp, and overall skin tend are sensitive and dry. I am prone to exzema and psoriasis if I’m not diligent.
I used to use commercial hair dyes, but I have not colored my hair in 1.5 years an do not have any other chemical products on my hair.
As I wrote above I would like to go back to a black color (not brownish black). In the past I found that a cool burgundy/cherry, not a warm auburn or orange, also worked well on my hair, so a black with a hint of cool burgundy would be ok.
Also, I would like suggestions for products to use to wash and condition my hair. I have many sensitivities and would prefer products that are rich and moisturizing and have the fewest ingredients. For example, I cannot use sunflower or safflower.
Also, I am growing out my hair. Although I prefer citrus scents, I also ok with Vanilla-based scents. I don’t like patchouli or any other woodsy or spicy scents. I live in Washington, DC.
These are some of the products that I’m thinking of getting.
–Moroccoan Henna
–Indigo for Hair
–Mad Moisture Shampoo and Body Bar
–Sweet Mimosa Butter as Pomade (Daily on ends, to manage tangles and to soften my hair. I usually wear a two-strand twist or other protective style. One question, how will this scent compare if used with the Mad Moisture Shampoo bar and Cocoveda Oil)
–Cocoveda Oil (Weekly or so, hot oil treatment. One question, how will this scent compare if used with the Mad Moisture Shampoo bar and Sweet Mimosa Butter?)
–Vanilla Essential Oil to add to the Henna (If I will be using the Mad Moisture Shampoo
to shampoo my hair)
I would be very appreciative of any and all suggestions and recommendations.
Thank you very much.
Anita
Elena, assalaamu alaikum. You can order indigo for hair and our Moroccan henna. The herbs last 2-3 years but really we recommend that clients try to use it within 1 year.
You can order enough for at least 3-4 applications at a time but really it’s up to you and how much you might use in a year.
Hello Anita, yes moroccan and indigo for hair would be perfect choices.
All the products are really excellent that you’ve looked at. The Cocoveda Hair oil smells more like coconut oil with a hint of sweetness. It’s a bit hard to describe. Those would be a great start.
I want to start up with henna, im using regular hair coloring atm. im looking for an orange/copper for my half dark blond and half grey hair.
what do i order?
like this color:

Thx very much..

hi assalaamu alaikum
I want to purchase moroccan henna indigo and amla
how can i keep my curl pattern how do i mix it? how much henna and indigo do i need my hair is shoulder length.
Hello Wayni. YOu can add at least 3-4 tbsp of amla powder to your recipe. You need about 100 grams of henna and indigo for your hair length.
Hi Krissy!
For that particular tone, 2 parts henna, 1 part amla and one part cassia would work well. Do try this out with samples as everyone’s hair turns out differently with henna. They greys will become lighter streaks of the same colour.
Take care!
I have blond highlighted hair, but also suffer from serious dandruff/seborrhea dermatitis. On top of that, my hair grows very slowly (4 inches a year). What product/s should I use?
Hi Heather. Thank you for posting.
I’d really recommend our Organic Cassia Obovata and our Organic Camellia oil. Those would be amazing and I know they would help. Within 3-4 weeks of using these products you’ll see an amazing improvement, all naturally without any chemicals đŸ™‚
Hey,
I’m planning on hennaing my hair for the first time, I currently have natural shoulder length medium brown hair with some goldy and reddy tones to it and was looking to dye it to a more orange than red colour, what henna mix do you recommend?
Thanks đŸ™‚
Hi Claire
For more of an orangey tone you would use henna with organic cassia at at least 50% of each in your recipe. Moroccan henna or jamila henna would be good choices.
Hi,
Which henna would you recommend for red-orange tones? I dont want too red or too orange. My hair is dark brown.
Hello Kim. Are you covering grey hair as the henna won’t ligthen your dark brown brown. But for an red-orange tone either Jamila or Moroccan henna would be your best choice, even with some Organic Cassia to bring out the orangey hue
Hey Khadija,
I have a few greys yes. I know the henna wont change my dark hair color but I looove the orange red tones I got from my first henna treatment. I bought it from another source which described it as coming from the Ragasthan region but I didnt find it very red as most Ragasthan henna has been described, so I got confused. The tone was a deep orange-red (auburn with red undertones maybe?).
I had it in for maybe 7 hrs do i dont know if thats why it wadnt as red/purple as people describe. I have zero experience with Jamila but im hoping it wont be too orange for my taste.
Hi! I am so glad I found this site. So very informative!!!! I have done a lot of research and know that henna is great for natural hair. I am interested in hennaing my hair and this will be my first attempt. Which one would you recommend? I am natural and would like some highlights. I have a patch of gray on the left front and a tiny area on the right at the temple area. I understand that the gray could possibly be a orangish copperish color and I am okay with that. Any advice you can provide would be most helpful. I want my first henna experience to be a positive one. Thanks!!!!
Dear Khadija!
thank you for a very nice blog. I’ve been having a henna pause for two years now, but now I want to start color my hair with henna again. The reason I stoped, was that at some point my hair just got to mahogny almost lila. I’m thinking about trying the Yemini henna this time, but have to ask just to be certain: Is this deep red color close to mahogny?
Thank you for any answers!
Vanja
Hi Kim. Did you ever try out the jamila or henna with cassia?
Thank you Isis ! Jamila henna would be a good start and our recommendation.
Thank you Vanja. The best choice would be our Red Raj if you’re looking for a consistent red tone. For more mahogany the organic Rajasthani Indian henna is your best choice. Yemen is unfortunately out of stock.
We hope this helps
Hi
I’m from south India with dry rough curly hair. It frizzez a lot and just doesn’t have that smoothness or shine to it. I have gray hair too and used to use Loreal’s color to turn it into black. In an effort to go natural, I ordered Organix Rajasthani henna and Indigo from Hennasooq. I used it last week and the grey are stll obvious. I mixed the henna with warm chamomile tea and the proportion I used is 75% henna and 25% indigo powder. I’m not very happy with the results. The grey hair looks very mild brown but it still stands out from the rest of the hair. Also, my hair feels a bit dry after the usage. What shampoo bar should I use for washing my hair?
Thank you
Preethi
Hello Preethi
The recipe you used was for a more reddish brown to brown tones. If you want your recipe to be darker please use more indigo. For shampoo bars our Pure carrot is a very good choice. You can also co-wash your treatment out to get moisture back into your hair
Thanks Khadija. I’ll try adding more indigo next time. Do you have any conditioners at hennasooq that I can buy? Should I choose silicone based conditioners?
I also don’t want the curls. Will applying henna and indigo loosen the curl pattern? should I be doing anything else for my hair to be straighter?
Preethi
