There are so many different henna powders, how do we choose the one that will work best for us?
There are a few things that are a must when choosing any henna powder:
–Fresh. You must always buy fresh henna powder. If you want a great stain, don’t just grab henna off the shelf (since who knows how long it may have been sitting there) Even from crop to crop you will notice that the freshest henna powder gives the best stain results. After all, doesn’t a chef use the freshest ingredients in the preparation of our meals?
–Body Art Quality. This means that the henna powder is the best quality since they take the leaves from the top of the plant with the most dye content. It also means that it is 100% pure and natural. This term is usually used to describe henna that is also used for body art.
(Please remember that not EVERY henna powder nor herb is body art quality. Ask yourself this: Is this henna powder or herb used as a body art product or really for hair usage? This term is sometimes only used for marketing purposes. Always be well informed.)
–Finely Sifted. None of that dirt, grit, sand, nor sticks help with getting a great staining henna paste. Even if you try to sift it yourself, you lose most of the henna powder you purchased.
–Pure. Must contain no pesticides or chemicals. No PPD nor any other powders or ingredients. Only get 100% pure henna powder.
Now that we have the basics down, now comes the individual henna powders.
Ultimately the highest dyeing henna powder on the market. For both henna for hair clients, and henna artists, by far the best choice of all henna powders for those wanting gorgeous red tones, grey coverage and long lasting henna body art tattoos. This organically certified henna powder is ready to use within 3-4 hours.
Khadija’s personal favorite: Supreme Blend Henna Powder
This henna powder blend was created by Khadija herself bringing the best henna powders together for a creamy, smooth, yet flowy henna paste. She uses this henna powder on all of her clients. We love this powder especially for body art temporary henna tattoos. Can be used on hair as well. Dye release is only 3-4 hours.
Jamila Henna Powder Jamila henna powder yields great stains results and comes conveniently packaged in 100 grams foil packages in sealed boxes (when it is stamped with summer crop for body art usage, and is also used for hair). As of more recently dye release is only 8-12 hours for body art tattoos, and 3-4 hours for use on hair, before ready to use. It is a reliable henna powder, but not great if you need henna quick. It has the ultimate best sift of ANY henna powder. It is very popular amonst professional henna artists, and for hair dyeing. It washes out of the hair very easily, and the texture pf the paste is similar to melted chocolate. It yields deep reddish-brown tones for body art and for hair orange-red tones. This henna comes from Pakistan.
Please read our more detailed article on Jamila henna powder.
Organic Rajasthani Indian Henna Powder
In ever increasing popularity, the organic indian henna powder from the Rajasthani Region, is very well balanced. You get dye release in 8-12 hours for body art. So you can start a batch in the morning and have it ready by the evening. The stains results are some of the darkest I have ever seen. Typically reddish tones (burgundy/mahogany) and sometimes near cherry black on skin. For hair it yields a reddish-burgundy tone.  For hair usage, this powder we recommend you allow it to sit from 3-4 hours, and then apply onto your hair. It is triple sifted and through nylon cloth. On lighter hair it may come out more orange-copper toned.
Yemeni Henna Powder
Note: Sadly this has been out of stock for quite some time due to political issues within Yemen. Our yemeni henna powder comes from the Sana’a region. It takes 8-12 hours to achieve dye release for body art. For hair, we recommend you allow this henna powder to sit from 3-4 hours before applying it. It is well known for being one of the stringy hennas. This henna powder is now much better sifted (since the 2009 crop), since the company has upgraded its henna processing facilities. Now many more henna artists are using this henna powder. It is absolutely one of the most popular henna powders for hair dyeing, and covers grey very well. It gives the most gorgeous, deep red tones of any other henna powder currently.
A very popular henna powder for both body art and hair, this henna is found in the Western Sahara. It has the quickest dye release. It is best to let this henna sit at least 2-6 hours for body art. For hair usage, only allow to sit for a maximum of 1 to 2 hours and then apply it. The dye can demise quickly if left out too long. It’s not a good henna to freeze as a henna paste. It is also a stringy henna. It has great color, usually very bright and becomes quite dark suddenly (on skin). We usually recommend this henna powder for achieving brown to black tones along with indigo, when used in hair dyeing because the least amount of red tones will show through on your hair. We recommend it because it has a fast dye release, and alone on hair it gives orange to red tones.

I am not sure I can use henna products. I have very, very light blonde hair and gray roots.I want to get away from the boxed chemicals of hair dye. I haven’t put anything on my hair in 3 months. I would like to go a darker blonde or if I have to, a light brown but not sure this can be achieved with a henna mix. Not sure how to mix ingredients. Kind of scary. Would prefer no red tones. But, if stawberry blonde is all I can do, then I may try that.l Also need to condition my hair because of split end and dryness. Thanks, Monica
Hi Robin!
It would come out a reddish-orange tint at first on such light hair but because it’s so light when you will get a rich vibrant red with repeated and regular uses. What color was your focus?
Hi Marjorie! Absolutely. Thank you. We really recommend our rajasthani indian henna for best results.
Hi Monica. For treating your hair and repairing it (conditioning) you can use our Sukesh Ayurveda, and also our Sweet Honey Hair nourisher. Your best choices! Now for color you can go blond and cover greys with our Organic Cassia but it is temporary andnot as long lasting as henna is. You can go strawberry blond if you end up preferring it over the cassia use alone. I hope this helps and please let us know if you need any further assistance, or have questions.
Hi Kadhija!
Thank you for the advice…will see the results!
HI. I have dark brown hair with 20% of gray just in front. What henna would you recommend as I want to keep my original hair color? No red or orange color please.
Thanks.
Hi, I am currently a customers of yours and would like to say thanks for all the support and great customer service you provide.
Now… I currently use the Moroccan henna and indigo so my hair is an auburn color and my roots are grayish I want to switch up the color… I am looking for a deep red like cherry cola, with red high lights. Which henna do you suggest… Thanks
Hello Harvinder. For dark brown you could use our Jamila for Hair or Moroccan henna with Indigo for Hair. This would give you the best dark brown results.
Verlie, thank you. We really appreciate our clients and love feedback. I’d just switch the henna from Moroccan to our organic rajasthani. That would be perfect.
Hello sir. I have some grey hairs. I want it to turn into black. So, which type of henna u will prefer to me? And I am using currently black henna powder bought from local store which contains 25% of PPD. Is it harmful?
Hi, I have super curly hair and I wanted to do a cassia treatment for bouncy and shiny hair but I’ve read that cassia will loosen my curl pattern. If I was to add Alma will that keep my curls from changing. I’m just looking for some great recipes for stronger and healthy hair, also I really need help with the growing process. I want to dye my hair but I’m going for a deep burgundy. Please recommend which henna I should purchase. Thanks
Alicia, thank you for your post. Yes cassia can loosen your curl pattern. You can add amla powder to maintain your curls. For a deep burgundy tone you can use our Organic Rajasthani Indian Henna powder. I hope this helps.
Siva, it’s better if you do use a more natural option for hair color. We recommend our Moroccan henna and Indigo for hair to achieve black tones.
Hi Mizy. It really does depend…as usually if you bought it at a store and it’s for hair, it usually is really best for hair. The best type of henna is body art quality as it has a better sift and color. It’s easier to do henna designs with BAQ henna. Hair quality won’t even come out of an applicator. You can use it to play with. What brand is it?
Hi which henna do you suggest for the bridal pattern? I am looking for best quality henna powder. Thanks
Good day Umm Yaz. Thanks for your post. This really depends on the bridal pattern and style. Can you provide some more details as to what style and amount of bridal henna you’ll be doing? Our best bridal henna powder is our Red Raj.
My hair is a really dark brown, almost black, and I’d like to keep my color. I don’t mind a little red tint, I just want the easiest preparation process with the best conditioning results possible. Which henna do you recommend?
Hello Eliana. The henna we’d recommend either either our Jamila BAQ 2015 or Moroccan Henna. This would give you a slight red tint but should you really prefer the dark brown to black tones you would need indigo as well.
Hello
I have red hair I have bleached my hair and colored it red since December of 2014. I recently dyed my hair again a month ago and I want to strengthen my hair without messing up the color too much but I don’t Mind if it changes to a burgundy. Which henna would you recommend ?
I put colora chestnut hair color it left my hair green. My daughter says probably cause I used it on bleached hair. I love the rest of the color though. My daughter says to use something with a red tone. How about abourn or mahogany. What do you suggest. I really like this product makes my hair soft. Also hairdresser says wait a week to try new stuff but I want to now
Good day Alexandra. Currently we’d recommend our Red Raj henna powder.
Hi Mary Lou. Thank you for reaching out. I believe due to both bleaching and the indigo that is most likely in your Colora color that has caused the green. Green mess ups come from indigo powder not the henna powder. I know this can be fixed. I’d recommend another henna coloring treatment and get yourself a good base of henna (alone so that would yield reddish tones, as there is not such plant that carries several colors but it’s commercializing of henna). Yes waiting a week gives your hair a nice break. It’s awesome your hairdresser is also so supportive! You can call me at 410-579-4543 from 10 am to 6 pm EST today if you’d like as well. I’ll be in the office all day today.
Hello Khadija,
I am new yet very interested in the Henna dying process for transitioning hair. I would like to know how long does the color stay? Is this treatment a permanent, semi-permanent or is it just a rise? I also have a dark brown hair and would love a noticeable red or copper color. Thank you for your help.
Hello Viael. Great to hear from you! Henna is a permanent hair color and will last 4-6 weeks. I would really recommend Red Raj for you, based on what you’d like to achieve. Speak soon.
Hi Khadija,
I’m also new to using henna and recently did my first application last Thursday.
I have 2 inches of natural dark brown roots with few greys, and the rest of the hair shaft is a light ash blonde tone from previous chemical dye.
My Indian friend got me curious in henna that I decided to give it a try.
Well I went to a local indian beauty supply shop here in Thailand and picked up one brand Neha which I was told that it was a popular brand in India.
Anyway, i first used the body art Neha with coffee, egg, lime juice, coconut oil and mixed
Cont, mixture sat for 2 hrs and then applied and set for 2 hrs. Result was nice on the natural roots but the hair shaft and ends were too coppery red. My friend said I should dye it darker with chemical and then reapply henna.
I didn’t want to use chemical again so I waited 1 week as it was slightly fading to redo with the Other Neha pack for hair with 13 herbs. Used in steel bowl, mixed w/coffee, black tea, coconut oil no egg this time. Set for 5 hrs, applied on hair for 4 hrs. This time the result was a rich deep dark brown on the roots and on the hair shaft to the ends were a deeper reddish almost burgandy color. Not exactly what I like. I want my natural dark brown hair with just a hint of yellow or red hue to the hair.
How can I get that color and tone? Indigo?
Hi Wendy. Thank you for your post. For the yellow, you probably won’t be able to maintain any yellow in your hair when using henna and indigo. For your roots you may need to give it a bit of time to “catch up” to have both that match, your length. Since you have two tones you have to concentrate on getting your length darker or to match your roots first, and then use henna alone and keep it simple to get the best color results. No egg for sure as that dilutes the dyeing results. You can dye your length with henna and indigo to match your roots rather then use chemicals. Then use henna only. I hope this helps đŸ™‚
Hey! Thank you for this informative article! Question: why I can’t buy anything using your website? I got interested in Yemeni henna..& went to purchase it but but it keeps saying it’s not available, actually non of the other henna is available I think. I hope your web store isn’t closing.
Hi Gulia. Sorry, we’re low in stock currently as we await the new Organic Indian Herbs crop to come in by end of October (fall crop times). We have Jamila henna and Moroccan henna in stock. Yemeni we really can’t get at all as there are political issues there in that country so we can import it in.
Hi I’ve been trying to get best quality henna for years and I seem to always get bad luck. I’m aiming to use it for body art only. I want to get a red indigo or dark brown/red color, I was also wondering what are the best way’s to make henna paste, I’ve heard many remedies, but so far I haven’t gotten results, thank you! (:
Yesi, thank you for your post. This is for your hair correct?
Hello
I am African and have black hair chemically treated . I want my hair red or copper what henna colour can I use. When dying my hair can I use it in conjunction with cassia.
Hi Candy. Yes you can use cassia as well but for your hair to be a reddish tint, you have to use 100% henna. You can use cassia afterwards. I recommend our Red Raj. We just got our shipment in and it will be available for purchase by Thursday-Friday.
Hi! What is the best type of henna product if i want to remain dark brown and cover my very resistent greys, approx 10 % may be less, of my hair. Previous henna use from Lush, in the uk, makes it too dark and the greys go orangey ginger. I would like a warm, glowing deep red, burgundy brunette, with the greys being very red, not orange. Is this possible?
Hi Purdy. Absolutely. You can easily achieve this with our Organic Rajasthani Indian Henna: http://www.hennasooq.com/fresh-organic-rajasthani-indian-henna-powder/
I am African and have black curly hair. I started using Reshma henna a week ago. I don’t mind if my hair color changed or not, but i want to keep my curly hair. What do you advice me regarding henna and curly hair.
Thank you.
Meg
Good day Meg. Thank you for your post on our blog. When using henna you have to add amla powder to your henna recipe OR do amla treatments alone after you use henna to maintain curls. You can purchase organic amla powder for this here: http://www.hennasooq.com/organic-amla-powder/
Hi, im asian and i have very dark hair color almost black, i would like my hair to be very light brown / chestnut color or light copper color. Which henna should i use?
And i would like to mantain my straight hair aswell. Since my hair is wavy ..Is it posibble to use amla powder to mantain the hair texture so it does not going curly?
Thank you for ur help:)
Hello Aisha. Thanks for your post. Unfortunately with henna you can’t go lighter. There are no natural henna products that can make your hair lighter except if they are in fact chemically based. Please see our color charts here:http://www.hennasooq.com/henna-for-hair/. Henna won’t change the texture of straight hair. If you want it curly or wavy then you would add amla powder to give it curl and wave. I hope this helps.
hi kadhija i’d been reading your blog about using henna I have black hair and I always been retouching those with products over the counter I would like to know how to dye my roots black or I need to chance my hair color totally using henna, and which color you recommend me I am Hispanic

Hi Farah! Sure you can view our color chart here for comparison and henna powder recommendations: http://www.hennasooq.com/henna-for-hair/
Hi Adela. Thank you for posting on our blog. We have a great chart on what to use to dye your hair black tones naturally with henna. Here is our chart: http://www.hennasooq.com/color/black-tones/
Please let me know if you have any other questions.
Hi Khadija.
I have light brown hair with few grays coming in around my crown.
I want to dye just the grays to match my natural brown.
I’m nervous because the rest of my long hair is blond due to sun and also very old dying. I’m in the process of growing out all the blonde old dyed hair and want to cover the grays around my forehead and sides of my face to match my natural brown.
I’m nervous because i don’t want any red or orange tones at all.
And i would love to do it in the most natural way as possible. My hair is soo dry. What do you recommend? Thank you so much!
Hello Annmarie. Do you have a photo of your natural hair color you can link here? For dryness we’d really recommend: http://www.hennasooq.com/oils/ and we have several conditioners as well. Please link a photo so we can get started on recommendations for you. Thank you đŸ™‚
My hair is blond, grey, dry and curly.
What do you recommend? Thank you.
hello, sorry, I asked this question on a different page, but I lost a link to that page. my natural hair color is light brown, I think, but currently it is chemically colored red. I would like to color it in dark warm brown, I am guessing “mahogany” color. Dark auburn would also work or any dark reddish brown, just nor ash brown. Is it possible with henna and indigo combination? I would like to know how to do it with my current red base as well as with my natural color as the hair will be growing out.:-) thank you!
Hello Marg. There are so many amazing recommendations that we could make. First I’d need to have a little bit more information. What is your hair focus? Specially what are you trying to achieve? Generally speaking since you mentioned your hair being dry and that it is blond, I’d recommend our Sweet Honey line of products, and our Organic Camellia oil all found at http://www.HennaSooq.com. Speak soon!
Very informative
I only have supreme henna where I am.
I chose a brown color.
Is it a good brand to use?
My hair is very dry and curly, and i would like to use a japanese relaxer afterward
