My hair is shedding more when I wash out my henna treatment! What’s happening to my hair?

We hear this quite often. Did you know there are ways to fix this issue? Here are a few great points and tips:

  • First things first, it is normal for a person to lose 100-200 strands of hair per day
  • If you’re twisting your hair on top of your hair during a henna/ayurvedic treatment, this is a big no-no. Chances are yes you’ll experience shedding and/or breakage.
  • You can change your method of washing out your treatment. Here are Vanessa’s tips: “I used to (experience a lot of shedding), until I started doing the braid method. Basically, I detangle my hair carefully and make several little braids with loose bases, and tie them off gently with those silicone bands. I then apply henna to my root area underneath and around the braid base using an old dye bottle to squeeze the henna in. I then mix the left over henna with my guar gum conditioner to create a strong gloss, snip off one elastic at a time and henna each braid gently. Each section gets pressed to the head. The whole head is wrapped as usual.
When it comes to washing out, I fill the basin up with warm water and dun my head in and gently swish my head around. I fill the sink up twice. After the second time, I slather more home made conditioner onto the length, apply a shower cap then hop into the shower
Less shedding, and all henna particles get washed out. Win-win.
The more gentle with your hair you are, the less shedding there will be. Henna makes the hair very heavy, so it is best to henna small sections at a time so that there is no extra weight pulling at the hair which can cause shedding.”
  • For shorter hair, you could use the same above method but with mini ponytails or buns.
  • You could also just co-wash out. This method is when you use conditioner only to wash it out
  • You could do a mermaid soak your hair and treatment out. This is basically like soaking your hair in your bath tub and letting it sway and swish in the water, like a mermaid đŸ™‚
  • Apply your treatments onto wet/damp hair for easier, smoother application
  • Use high quality body art quality henna powders from Henna Sooq. Using low quality henna and ayurvedic herbs leaves more grit, and twigs in your hair causing you to wash too thoroughly, and this causes tangles, breakage, and takes too much time.
