I have been having a ton of fun taking part in March’s Meet the Maker. I found out about it from a fellow henna artist on her IG feed @alchemyhenna and she’s also a client of ours here at Henna Sooq. Joanne Walker founded the idea and has all the details laid out on her IG @joannehawker. We’re now half way through the month of March (almost!) and I’ve share behind the scene photos, along with really opening up about the brand, the vision and my life. Back in 2005, I took a henna workshop with a well known artist in Montreal (where I’m originally from) and I was completely hooked. Starting out with some henna cones and 50 boxes of Jamila henna, Henna Sooq was born. In 2008, we moved to Toronto which was even more of a henna hub. I was busy with indian weddings, festivals and my first wholesale account @honey_fig . Sadly we had to move back to the USA in 2010, leaving behind our Canadian friends, family, our first house and many clients. I miss the days when they picked up your composting. Finally released! My new and updated 2017 henna BAQ pro recipe. Very easy to make and my henna secrets will be revealed. Get gorgeous rich red henna What you’ll need: bowl (glass or stainless steel) spatula or spoon optional, stick blender or KitchenAid mixer sugar (of your choice such as fructose or molasses) distilled water lemon juice Supreme Blend henna powder Red Raj Bliss Blend essential oil This recipe can be mixed by hand so don’t worry too much if you don’t have a KitchenAid mixer. Indigo is a natural Ayurvedic plant-based dye (vegan) that is used with henna to color hair reddish brown, brown, dark brown and up to black tones. It lasts 4-6 weeks and will cover greys. In this easy step by step video tutorial, I make the process of using indigo easy. Mixing indigo correctly is very important to the henna coloring process. When indigo isn’t mixed properly, your henna coloring treatment usually won’t give you those rich coloring results. Common Mistakes Indigo is mixed with a cold liquid. Indigo must be mixed with a warm to hot liquid. Indigo is mixed with liquids other then water. Do not use other liquids when mixing indigo. Indigo is mixed with a heavy liquid such as yogurt, conditioner etc…Indigo does not work at all when mixed with heavy liquids such as these. Indigo is mixed directly with the henna powder. Mixing henna powder and indigo powder together at the same time won’t work since both need separate times for dye release. Indigo paste sits out for too long. Dye release for indigo is only 20-30 minutes max. Indigo is used alone. If indigo doesn’t have henna in it’s process either as a previous and recent hair application or directly mixed with henna paste then the outcome is a green hue on the hair. No patch test was done. Making a full time living as a henna artist is as easy as sticking to these 5 steps. I can guarantee that from my own professional experience you can have a full time business in the henna industry that can support you and your family. I highly recommend that to start if you do plan to work in the henna industry for the next five years, that you come up with a business plan and make sure all of your book keeping is in order from the start. Creatives (and most people in general) definitely don’t want to be scrambling around to find receipts, expenses and invoices at a later time when you could be spending those hours on making your henna business absolutely amazing! Use High Quality Henna Products For you stand out from the rest you have to use high quality henna products. Making your own henna paste is especially important. If you are really struggling to make your paste exactly right do watch out YouTube video tutorials here. You can also buy henna paste from a reliable supplier that you can trust such as Henna Sooq. You can explain to your client how harmful additives and chemicals are added to pre-made henna cones (paste) and that you as an artisan does not use those type of products in your business.
